Dental Hygiene

A basic guide for dental care for children under 6 years old:

  1. Start Early: Begin cleaning your child's gums even before teeth come in. Use a soft, damp cloth or gauze to gently clean the gums after eating.
  2. Brushing: Once teeth start coming in, use a small toothbrush with soft bristles designed for babies. Brush your child's teeth twice a day, using a small amount of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).
  3. Supervise: Until around age 6, children will need help brushing their teeth. Make sure to supervise brushing sessions to ensure they are doing it correctly and not swallowing toothpaste.
  4. Technique: Angle the toothbrush towards the gum line and use gentle circular motions to clean the front and back surfaces of each tooth. Pay attention to the molars, as they are prone to cavities.
  5. Limit Sugar: Avoid sugary drinks and snacks as they can lead to cavities. Encourage water as the primary beverage and offer healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables.
  6. Regular Dental Checkups: Schedule your child's first dental appointment around their first birthday, or as soon as their first tooth appears. Regular dental visits can help detect any issues early and establish good oral health habits.
  7. Set the Example: Children learn by observing, so make sure to demonstrate good oral hygiene habits yourself. Brush your teeth together and make it a fun and positive experience.

Following these simple steps can help ensure your child develops good dental habits from an early age, setting the foundation for a life with healthy smiles.
